Solvent Gels for the Cleaning of Works of Art: The Residue Question (Research in Conservation)

Solvent Gels for the Cleaning of Works of Art: The Residue Question (Research in Conservation)

The cleaning of a work of art often involves removing not only dirt and grime but also unwanted layers of varnish, gilding, and paint from the work's surface. The challenge for conservators lies in finding a cleaning agent that will act on one layer without affecting the layer being preserved and without leaving any harmful residues on the cleaned work. This book, which examines gel cleaning in the treatment of paintings and painted works of art, presents the methodologies, data, and results of a collaborative project of the Getty Conservation Institute and Winterthur Museum.
Among the issues covered are the theory and application of gel cleaning systems, the detection of residues left on the surfaces of objects cleaned with these systems, research into solvent-gel and solvent residues, stability of surfactants during natural and artificial aging, and recommendations for formulating gels for specific cleaning tasks.

The guts of an electric stove does take work to clean ... just glad it is done. The steps are:
1. Pull out and clean all the pans and the elements and wash the guts out.
2. Dry and replace all the guts, elements, and pans.
3. Turn on all the elements to burn off any residue left over from cleaning.
Congrats! Now they are ready to use.

As you may have learned, in my exciting life Friday night is laundry night.

This is the filter on the tumble dryer, and on the top it has a simple instruction staring you in the face.

Laura maintains that she is the only person in the house who cleans the filter before each load.

I would go further. I think she's the only person in the world who cleans the filter before each load. :)

For an angler, it's tough to beat the fresh-caught flavor and satisfaction of a delicious fish dinner savored after a successful day on the water. But to get the most from your catch, it must be handled, cleaned, and prepared properly from the moment of capture. In this long-awaited guide, outdoorsman Monte Burch, with the help of step-by-step instructions and detailed illustrations, explains how to handle all types of gamefish caught in both fresh and salt water, including trout, salmon, bass, walleye, perch, catfish, northern pike, bluefish, redfish, striped bass, and many others.
This thorough handbook demonstrates the techniques required for gutting, scaling, skinning, steaking, and filleting all popular gamefish, and offers all the practical advice you'll need on choosing the methods that work best with the species you've caught. Burch also covers the knives, tools, and other equipment needed for preparing fish, and illustrates basic cooking methods. He covers all the major methods of preserving fish, such as freezing (in water or vacuum wrapped), drying, pickling, canning, and smoking. Then he shares many of his favorite recipes gleaned from a lifetime of experience in the outdoors, for frying, baking, poaching, and broiling your fish.
